Anti-Dictator: The Discours sur la servitude voluntaire
This podcast presents Étienne de La Boétie's Discourse on Voluntary Servitude, a classic 16th-century argument against tyranny and unquestioning obedience. La Boétie, a close friend of Michel de Montaigne, asks how a single ruler can dominate a whole people when the ruled themselves sustain the ruler's power. He argues that people enslave themselves by consenting to their own subjection and that withdrawing that consent can bring down tyranny. The text has inspired anti-authoritarian thought for centuries and remains a foundational reflection on freedom, power, and collective resistance.
