Podcast dedicated to the Backyard Ultra, a unique endurance race format where runners complete 4.167 miles every hour until only one remains. Each episode provides race recaps, reviews of events, and interviews with participants and organizers. Aimed at fans and runners of this grueling ultra-running challenge.

Yuko Sato
Yuko has been running Backyard Ultra's since her debut at No Time to Die in 2022 where she ran 15 yards. Since then she has run a PB at 6 of her BYU's and most recently broke the Australian Women's Backyard Ultra record by running 65 yards at Clint Eastwood Backyard Ultra.

Nikolay Kotenkov - Biotropika
Nikolay is the race organiser of Biotropika Backyard Ultra in Russia. Biotropika was run a few weeks ago now and is definitely the most controversial race in Backyard Ultra history. After both the male and female Backyard Ultra world records were broken, the format's creator and decision maker Gary Cantrell announced the entire race as void due to a breach in how the rules were followed.

Phil Gore - Project 168
Phil Gore is the Backyard Ultra World Champion and World Record Holder. He recently announced that he was running a Backyard Ultra style solo attempt at reaching 168 yards. Titled PROJECT 168. Phil came on to talk all about. Phil's website: www.philgore.com.au

Alex Cleary
Alex Cleary is a well known face in the Ultra running world from his work with Hardcore Harrys and involvement in the King of the Hill Livestream. Alex got his first taste of a Backyard Ultra at MVP earlier this year when he crewed for The Crow. A few weeks later Alex ran impressively at MelbOURne Frontyard where he ran 38 yards at his Backyard Debut.

Merlin Gammon - This is Your Life
Merlin came onto what he thought was going to be a usual chat on the podcast. He couldn't have been more wrong, with 6 guests dropping in along the way, all with their own special stories about Merlin and his run around Australia. This podcast was an experience.

Sam Christie
Sam finished as the Last One Standing at his BYU debut last year at Gil's Galavant. He later went on to finish as the assist at Garden City BYU where he ran 42 yards. Sam opened 2026 with another win at Gil's Galavant and most recently he had a huge breakout performance by running 66 yards and finishing as the Last One Standing at Dead Cow Gully.

Michael Rouleau
Michael ran his first Backyard Ultra in 2024 at BB Backyard and finished as the Last One Standing with 25 yards. Michael has fallen in love with the format and has improved his PB to 45 yards and in doing so, qualified for the Canadian Team which will be taking on the rest of the world in October at the Sat Champs.

Scott Cameron
Scott ran his first Backyard at Hysterical Carnage back in 2022 where he completed 15 yards. Since then Scott has run in four more Backyards, breaking 50 yards for the first time at GV last year and just last week at No Time to Die he finished as the co-assist with Jashy, completing 75 yards and placing himself 6th on the Australian At Large list.

Brady Nankervis
Melbourne Frontyard Ultra was held last weekend and it turned out to be an absolute classic race. Brady Nankervis played a huge role in the race, he completed 68 yards and broke the Australian record for most yards in a Backyard Ultra Debut. It was a performance so strong it will most likely qualify Brady to run for Team Australia later this year in the Sat Champs.

Jared Webb - The Conductor
Jared Webb had run in 5 Backyard Ultra's where he had broken 24 in all of them and had a PB of 31. That was till last weekend when Jared ran at Gumby and completed 50 yards to finish as the assist in an amazing performance.

Jack Hanley - The Crazy Running Man
Crazy ran his first Backyard Ultra last year when he ran a solid 33 yards at GV in Shepparton. Last weekend Crazy ran at Sydney's Backyard Ultra where he ran 74 yards and finished as the assist. That 74 yards places him as the 9th best Australian of all time and almost guarantees that Crazy will be running for team Australia at the Sat Champs later this year.

2 Rivers race brief with crew
Patto is running at 2 Rivers Backyard Ultra on the 11th of April in Echuca. The Crow and Farms will be crewing for him so the three of them got together to discuss the race plan, tactics and all the fun stuff.

Tammy Lovett
Tammy ran in her first Backyard Ultra in 2025 at Herdys when she ran 25 yards and finished as the Last Female Standing. A few months later she ran 38 yards at Red's which is a top 10 Australian female performance of all time. At Herdys recently Tammy was back with another very strong run, completing 30 yards and finishing as the Last Female Standing again for the second year running.

Jason Rantall - The Stalwart
The Stalwart had a great backyard ultra debut in 2025 when he ran 36 yards and finished as the Assist at Wild Dog. A few months later he had another big run at GV where he ran 37 yards. Just last weekend Jason had a breakout performance at Herdys Frontyard where he ran 49 yards and finished as the co-assist.

James 'Warhorse' Blanton
The Warhorse has run in 10 Backyard Ultras and has a PB of 82 yards which he ran for team Australia in 2024. Last year Warhorse ran at the International BYU World Championships in Big's Backyard for the 2nd time and ran 75 yards which puts him in rare air. James has done a lot of work on his mindset in recent years and we really focussed our conversation on that side of things.

Nikolay Kotenkov
*UNSCRIPTED* - Nikolay is Director of Biotropika, which is the biggest Backyard Ultra in Russia. In 5 years, it has grown into a large, family-oriented sports festival and a key development platform for the Backyard format in the country. Three Russian records have been established on the Biotropika course, including the current Russian record of 106 yards, set by Ivan Zaborskiy.

Ruben Zandman
*UNSCRIPTED* - Ruben made a massive life changing decision in 2022 which steered his life towards running and Backyard Ultra's. He absolutely loves Backyard Ultra's and ran his first in 2024 at Birdys where he ran his PB of 12 yards.

Jacob Garlick & Paul Pratt
Jacob and Paul both had epic races when they ran at MVP Backyard Ultra last weekend. Jacob ran 41 very impressive yards and finished as the Last One Standing while Paul showed that he is tough as an ox with his 40 yards and the assist.

Michael Sheekey
Michael is one of the rising stars on the Australian Backyard Ultra scene. He ran 32 yards at his first Backyard at Sydney's last year. He returned with 34 yards at Coffs in June and showed everyone how gritty and tough he is when he finished off the year running 48 yards at Sydneys in September.

Claudine Chi
Claudine has built winning mindsets for scores of champion ultra runners and Backyard Ultra runners that include James Blanton and Joel Sexton.
Claudine is a 16-time national and international karate champion, with a wildly diverse background. She has worked with thousands of elite performers, teaching them how to build a winning mindset, back themselves, and win.

Tim Nelson
**UNSCRIPTED** Tim ran his first Backyard Ultra in 2023 when he ran 9 yards at GV. He has been around the sport ever since, running his PB of 12 yards when he returned to GV in 2024 and then ran at 2 Rivers in Echuca last year. Tim and Patto teamed up at GV last year with Tim crewing for Patto for the first 24 hours of the race. All the best at 2 Rivers in April Tim!

Michael Distefano
*UNSCRIPTED* Michael was absolutely frothing to come on the podcast and talk all things running and Backyards. Michael has crewed and volunteered at a number of events and offers his own unique perspective on the format. Michael is planning on making his BYU running debut at Red's later this year.

Jeremy Curtis
*BUP UNSCRIPTED* - Jeremy ran his first BYU in 2024 at GV where he completed 28 yards. He returned to GV in 2025 and ran a new PB of 30 yards. Jeremy is fired up for a big 2026 and is going to be running at 2 Rivers BYU in April.

Tammy Wickham
Tammy ran the most yards by any woman in Australia in 2025. She had a huge year, running totals of 27, 35, 31 and 28 yards. It was over the new year at Glasshouse Standing where Tammy hit two huge milestones, she finished as the Last Female Standing as well as also finishing as the assist.

Dom Halbert
Dom ran in his first Backyard Ultra in 2021 at Suffolk. Since then he has run many more, including five this year alone. In Dom's most recent Backyard Ultra he finished as the Last One Standing and ran a PB of 32 yards in doing so.

Backyard Ultra year 2025 in Review

Simon 'The Roach' Macauley
Simon absolutely loves Backyard Ultra's. Since 2023 Simon has run in 5 Backyard ultras, three of which were run this year. He recently broke through 24 the yard barrier at Reds and he is also part of Jashy's all conquering crew.

Stephanie Rosebaugh
Stephanie has been running Backyard Ultra's for less than 12 months and she's already proven herself to be a force in the format. She ran 38 yards at Babbit's BYU in September and most recently completed 67 yards to finish as the Assist at Summit BYU (The Last Dance). That 67 yards ranks Stephanie as the sixth-best woman of all time.

Merlin Gammon - Wizardofrun
Merlin ran his first Backyard Ultra last year when he ran impressively to complete 30 yards at Wild Dog Backyard Ultra. Merlin is currently more than halfway through a mission running from the highest tip of Australia in Queensland down to its lowest point in Tasmania.

Ned Phillips
Ned ran 22 yards in his first Backyard Ultra in 2020 when he ran for team Singapore at the Sat Champs. Last year Ned finished as the Last One Standing and Singapore national champion which qualified him to run at the recent Individual World Championships at Big's Backyard. Ned ran the race of his life at Big's, completing an impressive 40 yards and finishing 58th overall.

Jayden McCormack
Jayden ran his first Ultra at The Guzzler 100 in 2022. He has run The Guzzler every year since and this year he ran it almost 10 hours faster than in 2022! Jayden also loves Backyards and last year he ran 27 yards in his first BYU at Dead Cow Gully and then he finished as The Last One Standing at Garden City BYU. Lily Lu
Lily Lu is an artist, author and film maker who started her running journey three years ago and has fallen in love with Backyard Ultra's. So far in 2025 Lily has run in over six Backyards and most recently Lily finished as the Last One Standing at Helvetia Backyard Blitz, completing 25 yards.

Dan Camac - 93 Yards
Last year at the Sat Champs Dan ran 75 gutsy yards for team Australia, which qualified him to run at the Individual Backyard Ultra World Championships at Big's Backyard in Tennessee. Dan proved that he is among the worlds elite by running 93 yards and placing 11th in the World.

Phil Gore - The GOAT
Just over a week ago, the Backyard Ultra Individual World Championships took place at 'Bigs Backyard' in Tennessee, attracting the sport's very best on Earth. Phil Gore, the reigning world record holder, demonstrated his dominance once again, securing the victory in commanding fashion after an incredible 114 hours of endurance. Macee Latimer
Macee is a runner from New Zealand who ran her first Backyard Ultra in May at Best Dam Backyard. She finished as the Last One Standing with 43 yards, averaging 40 minutes a loop. Just last weekend Macee ran at Scenic Circles and finished as the Last One Standing again, this time with 38 yards. Macee hopes to qualify for the New Zealand Sat Champs team next year.

Hendrik Boury - Bound for Bigs
Hendrik is returning to Bigs Backyard next month to run in the Individual Backyard Ultra World Championships after a heartbreaking DNF in 2023. Last year Hendrik improved his Backyard PB to 82 yards at Suffolk BYU and he also finished as the Last One Standing for Germany at the Sat Champs.

Josh & Kyle - Lumina Productions
Josh and Kyle were at Dead Cow Gully this year following Harvey Lewis's journey and capturing it all on film. It was great to relive the epic record breaking race with Josh and Kyle from their perspective and to hear how they went through the film making process at Dead Cow Gully.

Holly Ranson - 61 yards
Holly ran her first Backyard Ultra in 2022 at Hysterical Carnage where she completed 30 yards before the race was stopped. Just recently she ran at Dead Cow Gully and ran a huge race running 61 yards, breaking the Australian women's Backyard Ultra record in the process. James Blanton and Ryan Crawford are off to Tennessee for the Individual Backyard Ultra World Championships at Bigs in October. This is the first of a 4 part podcast series that will follow James and Ryan on their journey. Colin Moulden
Colin ran his first Backyard Ultra in May at No Time to Die where he ran 25 yards. Last weekend Colin fronted up at Birdys and he had an incredible performance, finishing as the Last One Standing running 59 yards.

Jashy - 100 Yards
Jonathan Ash has rapidly made his way up the Backyard Ultra ranks since his 57 yard performance at Reds Last year. At Dead Cow Gully recently Jashy lined up alongside the worlds best and put on an incredible show, breaking 100 yards for the first time.

Simon McLean
Simon had a huge 2024 running Backyard Ultra's. He qualified for team New Zealand with a 51 yard performance at Kings and he backed up at the Sat Champs for his national team with 65 yards. Simon grabbed the bull by the horns at Dead Cow Gully where he ran an incredible 90 yards which qualifies him for the Individual BYU World Championship at Bigs in October.

Phil Gore - 119 Yards World Record
Phil Gore broke the Backyard Ultra world record at Dead Cow Gully by running 102 yards with Sam Harvey as the assist in 2023. Just over a week ago Dead Cow Gully was back with an amazing field of runners and Phil once again showed how good he is by running an absolutely incredible race, setting a new Backyard Ultra World Record of 119 yards.

Tim Walsh - Dead Cow 2025
Dead Cow Gully (Masters) is kicking off this weekend showcasing some of the best Backyard Ultra runners in the world. Race Mastermind and Director Tim Walsh came on to talk all things backyards and Dead Cow.

Barry Thomas
Nearly everyone who has run an ultra in Victoria would have met Barry in his sports beer marquee at some point. In the last couple of years Barry has really taken an interest in running Backyards himself and his results are impressive. Just recently at 2 Rivers Backyard Ultra Barry ran 31 yards, which at 62 years old is the most yards ever completed in a BYU by someone his age in Australia.

Rose Fuller
Rose ran her first Backyard Ultra last year at GV where she ran 19 yards. After GV Rose decided that she really wanted to commit to the BYU format and see how far she could go. Rose recently ran at 2 Rivers BYU and ran a huge race, completing 30 yards, which makes her only the fourth woman ever to break 30 yards in a BYU in Victoria.

Lukasz Wrobel
Lukasz grabbed the attention of the Backyard Ultra world last year with his amazing Last One Standing performance at Suffolk BYU where he ran 88 yards. A few weeks ago Lukasz ran at Legends BYU in Belgium, where he broke the Backyard Ultra WORLD RECORD by running for an incredible 116 yards.

Kendall Picado Fallas
Kendall ran his first Backyard Ultra last year at Sydney's and completed 18 yards. This year he fronted up to Sydney's again and ran an incredible race to complete 50 yards, making him at 21 years old, the youngest person in the world to break 50. Kendall's next race is on the 24th May in the USA at Nick Bare's Go One More Ultra.

MelbOURne Frontyard - Nicholls & Dube
In 2022 Ben Nicholls and Mat Dube were the first to take a Victorian Backyard Ultra into the 40's. Last week they were at it again, being the first to run a Victorian Backyard Ultra into the 50's (not including Sat Champs), at Melbourne Frontyard Ultra.

Jonathan Ash - Jashy
Jashy burst onto the Australian BYU scene last year when he ran 57 yards at Reds to qualify for team Australia. Since then he has proven himself to be one of the very best Backyard Ultra runners in the world, running 75 yards at the Sat Champs and most recently he finished as the Assist at Sydney's BYU with 80 yards.

Tim Moffatt
Tim is a familiar face in the BYU world through his crewing, running and providing statistical analysis. Tim was always planning for 2025 to be the year where he focusses on running Backyard Ultras and he started the year in the best possible way, finishing as the Last One Standing at Herdys, smashing his PB in the process and proving himself to be a really exciting runner to watch.

Mitch McInnes
Mitch ran 32 yards in his first Backyard Ultra last year at I'm Still Standing BYU and then 21 yards at Clint Eastwood. After some fine tuning of his race plan Mitch showcased what he is capable of with an outstanding 40 yard Last One Standing performance at 2025's I'm Still Standing BYU.

Lizzie Gatherer
Lizzie ran her first Backyard Ultra in 2021 where she completed 19 yards. She spent the next three years running many ultra's up to 200 miles till she returned to the Backyard racing world ready to make her mark. At Rasselbock BYU this year Lizzie finished as the assist running 50 yards, becoming the 21st woman in the world to reach the 50 yard milestone.

Iain Bethune
Iain Bethune's first Backyard Ultra was at the Cow Shed BYU in 2022 where he ran 27 yards. Iain and his wife Julie are believed to be the only Husband/Wife duo to have made their countries BYU team when they ran for team UK last year. Dave Kwiatkowski
Dave ran his first Backyard Ultra at Andy's BYU in 2021. He has been consistently improving since then, running 37 yards at Capital and 52 yards at Ohio's. Notably, he claimed the title of Last One Standing at Queeny BYU, which earned him a spot on Team USA for last year's Sat Champs. There, he delivered an outstanding performance, completing 64 yards and achieving his personal best to date.

Duncan Nichols
Duncan embarked head first into his running journey after discovering the Backyard Ultra format in early 2024 where he crewed for a friend at MVP. He made his Backyard Ultra debut at MVP this year, completing 26 yards and finishing in the top 5.

The Crow & Farms
Brandon 'The Crow' Lee and Dan 'Farms' Farmer have been running together in the Ardeer Trotters for just over a year now. Over the last couple of months The Crow and Farms have been training together in preparation for MVP which was run last weekend in extreme conditions. The Crow finished as the assist with 30 yards and Farms finished third with 27.

Intenseatfit - Gaby Villa
Gaby has been fuelling athletes for 10 years, working with many of the worlds best Backyard Ultra Runners. It was great being able to have Gaby back on the podcast, where we explored the vital role of nutrition in Backyard Ultras and gained valuable insights from her expertise.

Sean Lyons
Sean ran his first backyard ultra at Dead Cow Gully back in 2022 when he ran 30 yards. Since then he has increased his PB to 37 and just recently finished as the Last One Standing at Glasshouse Standing.

Frank Gielen - 110 Yards
Frank was part of the all conquering Belgium Backyard Ultra team that finished on top of the world standings at the World Satellite Team Champs in 2024. Frank was one of three runners who broke the world record in that race when he, Ivo and Merijn called it a day after running 110 yards.

Clayton Talbot
Clayton loves Backyard Ultra's, he's run in three and his best result is currently 25 yards which he ran at I'm Still Standing BYU earlier this year. Clayton also organises a BYU run club that meets monthly and runs in different locations around Sydney.

Vic Owens - The Happy Runner
Vic has been running ultras since 2017 and ran in her first Backyard Ultra at Rasselbock in 2023 where she completed 30 yards. Since then Vic has run many more Backyards including a recent 40 yard LOS performance at God's Own BYU. Vic is also 11 BYU's into her mission of running 12 BYU's in 12 months.

Sarah Perry & Alex Sweet
Sarah Perry was the last one standing at the Sat Champs for Team UK when she ran 59 yards, breaking the UK female record. Alex Sweet also had a remarkable race, achieving an 18-yard personal best as the assist.

Viktoria Brown
Viktoria ran 34 yards at her first Backyard Ultra for team Canada at the Sat Champs in 2020. Since then she has run a PB of 49 yards and ran for the Canadian Sat Champs team again in 2024. As well as her impressive BYU results Viktoria also holds the Canadian 48hr, 72hr and 6 day ultra running records.

John Bayne
John has outstanding results across all different types of ultra running distances and formats. His breakout backyard performance was last year when he ran 51 yards at Dead Cow Gully. Most recently he was team Captain for the 'Flying Kiwis' at the Sat Champs and ran a new PB of 72 yards as the assist.

Phil Gore - Post Sat Champs
Phil is undoubtably one of the very best Backyard Ultra runners in the world. Last year he broke the 100 yard barrier twice including when he ran a world record 102 at the Dead Cow Gully Masters. Phil recently ran for team Australia at the Satellite Team World Championships finishing as the Last One Standing with 96 yards and helped guide Australia into second place in the World standings.

Scott Snell
Scott's been running Backyard Ultra's since 2021 and has proven himself to be one of the toughest and most consistent runners out there. He recently took things to another level finishing as the Last One Standing when he ran 88 yards for team USA at the World Team Championships at Bigs taking home the coveted golden 'Big Dogs' coin.

Ross McLean - Sydneys Last One Standing
Ross McLean has been a consistently good Backyard Ultra runner since his first run at MVP back in 2022.
